The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a global humanitarian crisis.

To support the people who are hit hardest by this pandemic, we organized a benefit by inviting leading scientists in the field of optics and photonics to contribute to this special issue. With the support of the publisher of Nanophotonics, DeGruyter, we are able to donate all the proceeds from the publication fee of the 60+ articles to charity supporting the fight and victims of COVID-19.

We have collected a total of Euro 136.800 that will be donated to charities that support the first-aid workers and people in need of medical help around the world.

With gratitude we like to thank all the scientists who have contributed to this special issue on such short notice and the publisher for being so generous to donate the publication fees.

This issue titled Frontiers in Optics and Photonics holds a collection of research, review, and opinionated articles in many exciting and rapidly developing areas of optics and photonics, a discipline that continues to enable fundamental advances and new technology touching an ever-increasing number of fields and disciplines.

We hope that in addition to supporting this humanitarian disaster, this issue also demonstrates how science unites us all and how interconnected we truly are.
